Paul Speed started playing the trumpet aged 10 and gained his first interest in Wind bands at High Wycombe Music Centre.
He went to Goldsmiths’ College, University of London gaining a BMus Hons degree before studying the trumpet further with Paul Cosh and Paul Archibald.
As a freelance player, Paul has played for many orchestras including Hong Kong Philharmonic, London Concert Orchestra, New London Sinfonia and the Philharmonie der Nationen in Germany. He has also played with the Italian Chamber Orchestra Musica Seaculorum, performing on period instruments for a live recording for radio. Paul has also played with Desford Colliery Brass Band and is also 1st Trumpet with the Chiltern Brass Quintet. Paul enjoys teaching at Wellington College, Berkshire and the Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe.
He is the resident musical director of both South Berks Concert Band and Trinity Concert Band. Paul also jointly conducts the Brass for Africa Brass Band, and has been fortunate enough to visit Kampala to see the work that is being done there. In his spare time Paul enjoys running, though not as quickly as he would like.
